The bad news

April 9th, 2008

According to Chowhound, the veggie hot-dog at Hot Doug’s is not vegan!

wtf am I gonna do? I was going to go there and eat for #42. Should I switch it to a different restaurant? Go on a mission to find a good vegan dog somwhere else? Oh, the heartache this blog causes.

I’ve already broken one food rule, in case you didn’t notice. For problem #41 I said I would bike to Veggie Bite on the south side with Amy… and then the Veggie Bite opened in Wicker Park (remember I was so excited?)

It was gross. Some of it was fine, and it was vegan and fast food and I’ll probably buy one of everything if I’m hungover or having a bad day some time in the future, but it was still gross. I’m not biking 25 miles one way for gross.

Curse you Doug, curse you Veggie Bite!

Veggie Bite

Don’t let the good looks fool you. Although… this photo is triggering some pleasant memories for me that involve the fries. Those weren’t half bad.

I was pretty excited to hear about Veggie Bite opening up on the northside but after this review, it’s confirmed some mild suspicions I had about it — fast food, super processed, things of that ilk. Also, the whole deep fried aspect.

I suppose, even if it is vegan, it doesn’t make it healthy — there’s a ton of processing going on with a lot of the fake meat/substitutes and I’m beginning to wonder if that’s really all that much better versus humane meats and seasonal and local eating.

The veggie dog at Hot Doug’s is phenomenal though — as many have noted in reviews, I almost thought they had given me the wrong order.

exactly - it’s really not healthy or very good at all, but it does give me options on days I need to binge. I should be grateful for that. :)

perhaps a trip to Ben’s Chili Bowl in DC is a good substitute. Their veggie chili is to die for, and they’ll put it on a veggie burger for you. mmmmm….

perhaps the veggie dog at huey’s (balmoral & clark in andersonville) is vegan?? plus their fries are better–sorry, hot doug.
